Camping at Cumberland Falls State Resort Park

Established in August of 1931, Cumberland Falls is often called the “Niagara Falls of the South” thanks to its stunning waterfall. Cumberland Falls State Resort Park leverages that history and natural beauty for a unique camping and outdoor experience. Visitors travel from around the country to gaze at the thunderous 60-plus foot high and twice-as-wide falls, enjoy excellent fishing and floating opportunities, and just take in the splendor of a well-maintained state park. There’s something for everyone, including fully developed campsites and more austere tent sites, lodge and cabin housing, outdoor games, a swimming pool, hiking trails, excellent fishing, and more.
WHAT MAKES IT GREAT
While visitors may be initially drawn to Cumberland Falls State Resort Park for the rivers, hiking, fishing, , or well-developed campsites, one of the most remarkable aspects of this state park is the waterfall itself. The massive falls can be heard thundering from quite a way off, dropping dramatically into a boulder-strewn gorge. On clear nights with a full moon, it’s possible to see the “moonbow”—a lunar rainbow that appears in the mist at the base of the waterfall. It’s said this phenomenon is only duplicated at the famed Victoria Falls in Africa.
Visitors have a seemingly endless offering of outdoor activities at their fingertips. Water lovers can try their hand at whitewater rafting, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, and fishing, all within the park. Those keen to remain on dry land can take advantage of 17 miles of trails winding through the area and leading to scenic areas and overlooks. Thanks to an on-site stable, horse lovers can mount up for a guided trail ride and explore the country just as it was when Daniel Boone roamed the neighboring hills.
Anglers will find themselves right at home on the Cumberland River, casting for a plethora of resident bass, catfish, panfish, and roughfish. An Olympic size pool, horseshoe pits, and shuffleboard pair nicely with an evening beverage after a long day exploring, and interpretative programs led by a full-time recreation specialist detail the local flora and fauna along with area history.
For those seeking relaxation, beautiful scenery, and plenty of recreation options, Cumberland Falls State Resort Park doesn’t fall short. A visitor’s center, gift shop, and snack shack are all on-site to ensure you have the knowledge and fuel you need for a stint of outdoor adventure in the Kentucky hills.
WHO IS GOING TO LOVE IT
The Cumberland Falls State Resort Park is well-suited to both traveling adults and families alike. Thanks to the broad selection of activities, children will stay entertained during their stay. Adults adventuring on their own can find solitude on the trails, camaraderie at the campground and plenty of adrenaline on the river. Thanks to multiple river features, the Cumberland River accommodates both leisure swimmers and thrill-seeking whitewater rafters.
For those looking to make Cumberland Falls State Resort Park the jumping-off point of a larger adventure, the Moonbow Trail connects with extensive backpacking trails in the Daniel Boone National Forest.
