Keeneland Thoroughbred Racing & Sales

Celebrating 80 years of racing tradition, Keeneland is truly a jewel in the Thoroughbred industry. Located in the heart of the Bluegrass region, Keeneland is at once both historic and cutting edge, and is the pulse point for a significant global business. As the world’s largest Thoroughbred auction house, Keeneland conducts three annual horse sales – the September Yearling, November Breeding Stock and January Horses of All Ages – which in 2016 grossed a combined $523 million. Keeneland has sold more champions and stakes winners than any other sales company, including 20 Kentucky Derby winners and 95 Breeders’ Cup winners.   Keeneland’s two annual race meets – the Spring Meet held in April and the Fall Meet in October – offer some of the richest purses and most competitive racing in the country. Anchoring Keeneland’s racing program are its two $1 million races, the Toyota Blue Grass in the spring and the Shadwell Turf Mile in the fall. In 2015, Keeneland hosted the $26 million Breeders’ Cup World Championships. In addition to its sales and racing, the grounds are also home to the Keeneland Library, one of the world’s largest repositories of information related to the Thoroughbred. Established in 1939, the Library houses nearly 30,000 books, journals and catalogs and is home to numerous collections, including the 5,000-volume archive of the Daily Racing Form and 3,000 pieces of art by the internationally celebrated artist “Peb.”   The public is welcome to attend Keeneland’s sales and race meets, as well as explore the Library and the track’s park-like setting throughout the year. Keeneland is open every day to visitors, and offers guided walking tours (please visit http://www.keeneland.com/discover/tours for details).
